Water is the background of many of these poems, with a wide range of contexts and interpretations, from historical and mythical, through to everyday experiences. Some describe childhood, others more mature relationships, with settings in both England and Greece, where the poet lived for many years. From the discovery of a dead python in a North London canal, to Victorian water cures, the hatching of mayflies, the focus varies, and experiences are often contrasted within several poems.
Whether driving in snow chains, watching a friend being baptised in the sea, or feeling sick going round Beachy Head in a small boat, Vince provides both entertainment and food for thought.
